Featured Car - Jim Cuba's 1987 Grand National
Featured Car
Jim does a nice job of heating the skins before another 10 second pass on his STREET car!
Jim has owned his 1987 Grand National since 1994. When he bought it the car had approximately 50,000 miles on it. The car was a basic high 12 second/ low 13 second recipe car. He drove it for several years on a daily basis until the car had about 104,000 miles on it.

With a TE-44 and blue tops Jim got the car into the low 12's. Well that was just not fast enough! (Have we all said/heard this before?) About 2 1/2 years ago, he decided to take it down and do a little tweaking! After countless hours of tuning and testing the car is responding nicely.

The most recent time slips are a 10.54 at 126.12 mph. This was a 6.71@103 mph run in the 1/8th mile. Jim's fastest 1/8th mile run is a 6.66@104 mph. This run would have easily been a 10.4X run!

Jim's Combination is as follows:

  • 235 inch stock block with billet caps and studs
  • JE pistons (dry film coated and ceramic tops)
  • Stock crank/rods balanced
  • Stock heads ported
  • 210/205 cam
  • T&D 1.65 ratio roller rockers
  • DeQuick Front mount intercooler
  • TE-63 four bolt turbo
  • 50# MSD injectors
  • Fel Pro fuel injection
  • ATR headers, wastegate, downpipe, and 2 1/2 dual stainless exhaust
  • Art Carr 9" converter 3500 stall
  • 200-4R trans
  • 3.90 gears
  • 28X10.50 ET drag tires and 275/60/15 BFG drag radials (street)
  • The car has full interior and all working accessories. I still drive it very often on the street to play on weekends.

The car has proven to be very consistant in bracket racing and has allowed Jim to win the following races:

  • 1998 Texas Musclecar club challenge 1st place King Muscle
  • 1998 ID drag wars Import vs. Domestic shootout 1st place
  • 1999 Lonestar Raceway car club bash, 1st place once and has won the President's race on two separate occasions

  • 2000 Winner fastest ET, street car, Little River (10.54 qualifying pass)
  • 2000 Winner 1st place Lonestar Performance Buick club mini nats

Jim is looking forward to the rest of the year and beyond to race this car and enjoy the comraderie of other Buick folks.
