Has anyone ever had a rocker arm retainer pop off and cause the rocker arm to come loose in the valve cover? I started my 86 and heard an awful clatter from the passenger valve cover. I pulled the cover and found the retainer (nylon) had come off and the rocker arm was loose on the shaft. I went to remove the push rod and it looked like King Kong had used it for a toothpick. So I make a run to the parts store and purchased all new push rods and retainers. I replace them and fire it back up. The clatter is gone but it still has a dead miss on the cylinder that the rocker came loose on. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Maybe the retainer let go, the valve dropped in the cylinder and was slammed up by the piston? Just speculating but if that happened and you now have a dead miss *could* be a bent valve. Good luck with it.

pull the plug and run a compression test
