I was wondering what is the best place to have chips burned for the turbo buicks? Who is well known, who have people had good experiences with?

+1. Eric is the man who cares and can work with you if needed!

Thanks, guys. Anyone have experience with Red Armstrong?

Thanks, guys. Anyone have experience with Red Armstrong?

old technology, decent chips, ERIC at TurboTweak [like mentioned] or Mike Licht/Bob Bailey at FullThrottle..... either one and you will be happy

I've used Red quite a bit. No user-programmable features, but I feel his chips still work. I'll be trying a TT chip and see if there is improvement.

FWIW, I think that having too many adjustments can get the average person into trouble. (i.e. adjustable MAF Translators, chips, etc.) Not many understand what the results of all that they might adjust truly are. Or even what it all really does.

I had all kinda knock with Red's chip. Threw it out the window and had Eric from TurboTweak burn me a chip and all my knock went away. You decide! :brows:

Uh...yeah.

Ever try to find out why you had knock? Like, did you have 10 PSI fuel pressure? Running a 110 octane chip on 87 octane gas? Did it have too much timing? Do you know how much timing it had? Simply saying "it knocked, so I tossed it" doesn't tell much.

BTW, anyone else wants to give old chips the heave-ho, I'll be happy to take them. My UV eraser will make them all fresh and clean again. Don't believe they make blank 2732A chips anymore...

Uh yea I found the knock. It was the POS Red's chip that was in my car. Sorry but his chips are junk. Simply changed the chip and the knock went away. Car has been running perfet ever since and I didn't change anything other then the chip.

I've run Red's chips for close to 15 years with good luck, and good ET's. I know the TurboTweak ones are heavily recommended, and I plan to try them this season. If they're as great as everyone says, I'm expecting to shave more ET. We'll see what really happens.

For the benefit of those reading along, it would be great if there was some data that showed the causes of the knock, and if it was chip related. (i.e. not enough fuel during AE, too much timing all the time, too much timing on PE, etc.)

Is it possible modify the turbo tweak chips yourself, or do they burn a new one everytime a slight change is needed?

They have a small amount of adjustment built in for timing and fuel as I recall. NOT for injector size.

So the turbotweaks are EEPROM instead EPROM chips?

Keller

They are EPROM, like all the rest. However, a few people have figured out how to have a few bytes in the ECM memory change based on external inputs (i.e. accelerator to WOT while ignition is on, car in gear or not in gear, etc.) while the ignition is on, but the engine is off. These change what the chip does in minute ways.

These types of settings have been used used in the MaxEffort chips from Steve Yaklin (I think...they are thumbwheel as well), the anti-theft features of the Thrasher chips, and the TurboTweak chips, of course.

Thanks Keller. I just bought an 86GN. Trying to learn as much as I can about what is out there, for upgrading performance. Do you know what processor is on the ECM for the 86/87GN? Not that matters all that much, it is interesting to learn what technology was used on these older vehicles.
