how much boost will a stock intercooler on my 86' handle? i am hoping for a TE-44. also what is the max boost for the TE-44?

I don't know what level of boost a stock IC is rated to handle, but the real question is what is it still efficient to. Same thing with turbos.

The stock turbo isn't very efficient over 20 PSI. I routinely use my TA49 (same turbine/compressor as TE44) at 22-24 PSI with race gas at the track. Pump gas won't allow that much boost on the street. Propane or alcohol injection systems might allow you to, however.

I also use a modified stock intercooler with a new core installed that handles things OK. A 'stretch' stock location intercooler with more cooling surface area or a 'front mount' might be a better choice, but I like being sneaky. ;)

http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/recipes/Staged1.html is a good overview of one step by step approach to going through a buildup.

so what is the TE-44 best to run PSI wise with the old intercooler?

If you have a compressor map then you will be able to tell the optimum pressure (PR) that you will want to operate given certain parameters.

Post the map and I'll do the calculations for ya.

From a structural standpoint, it should easily handle 3 bar. How much boost you run all depends on how efficient you want it to work.

o ok, thanks.
