I had a little time on my hands today so I thought I'd round out my knowledge of the RPO code meanings for my car - 84 GN.

Well after many hours some items are still unclear. Any info anyone can offer would be appreciated.

1 - RPO codes 60 H and 60 I appear to be for Lear Siegler seats (60 H) and interior trim (60 I) colour - light sand grey. Can anyone confirm the 60 I being interior trim colour so I can buy some vinyl paint for my interior.

2 - I have RPO code NW 9 which is for Traction Control - does anyone know just what that is on an 84 GN and how to activate it or turn it off (my STS has manual on/off button).

3 - I ordered my build sheet from George Zapora, the "Vintage Specialist" @ GM and it shows a number of aluminum items (N 89 wheel turbo aluminum), (J 42 brake drums aluminum), (T 47 hood turbo aluminum) and (VD 6 and VD 7 Reinforcement front bumper aluminum). I have seen some discussion on the site about the hood not actually being aluminum. Any confirmation ar information as to accuracy of the words on the build sheet would be great.

Thanx :)

First, have you read http://www.gnttype.org/numbers/rpo.html carefully?

1 - I believe the 60H is the interior designation for that model. Someone who knows the '84's better can fill in the blanks.

2 - Perhaps you have MW9, which is the 200-4R with the lockup converter, and is a standard option on all the TR's. The was no traction control offered.

3 - T47 was the turbo hood; no aluminum hood offered. You can look on/under your car and confirm if the bumper reinforcements and rear drums are aluminum. They may well be. The latter usually came on cars lacking G80; positraction rear.

Yeah you're just reading the codes wrong. The code for the L-S seats is AQ9. 60I is the Interior(I) color. 60H is the fabric type and color. It should be MW9 for the 200-4R.(The codes are listed in alpha-numeric order on the SPID label if you need to confirm the letter M) T47 is Turbo Hood. N89 is the alloy wheel for the GN. J42 is the aluminum drums. All 1984 TRs without the G80 LimitedSlip(Posi) and with the N89 Wheels recieved the J42 Drums. If the TR has the G80 code than it should also have the J41 Steel Drums. All 1984 TRs have the VD6/VD7 Aluminum bumper reinforcements

Thanx Guys. The numbers I am quoting are from both the trunk list and from a letter from GM I ordered back in August 2005. Both 60 H and 60 I are on the SPID label and I have bought paint for the vinyl trim using 60 I which was a perfect match. The letter from GM actually does show "ALUM" in each of the RPO codes for my car.

Also, my vin ends in EH550072. Does this actually mean the 72nd car off the assembly line in Flint?

To chip in, the NW9 code doesn't exist on any G body (traction control). It's gotta be MW9.

Eric (turbofish) has been in the GM parts business since the early 80s and knows the SPID/RPOs better than anybody...

Right you are guys. The NW9 in GM's letter was a typo - spid label actually MW9.

The whole thing is confusing and maybe I'm just not looking in the right place; but when I go to the "numbers rpo page I can't find the 1984 part. I checked to see if the general numbers applied and went to the codes N91 through VD6 and checked for N89 which I know for sure is my aluminum wheels, there was no N 89 so the rpo's for 1984 must be different.

Anyway - still researching. More detailed post to follow.

Man is this ever confusing. I wrote to GM Canada back in 2005. For $48.15 cdn at the time they sent me the attached letter and a copy of the " hottest Buick this side of a banked oval" ad from back in the day, along with 37 pages (double sided) of information.

It shows the Lear Siegler bucket seats as Regal T Type COUPE (Extra Cost) with "Sand Grey 795 Cloth".

A couple of pages mention the GN with very few codes (e.g. it shows Lear Siegler front and rear seats trim code 995).

The letter shows 86 codes and the SPID label in the trunk shows 95. Beyond that, the letter has six codes that are not on the SPID label and the SPID label has nine codes that are not on the letter.

The six codes in the letter and not on the SPID are:

BX5 MOULDING ROOF DRIP (PAINTED)
CO1 EMBLEM - SAIL PANEL
G87 GEAR, RING 8.50 IN
YS2 SEAT RR DELUXE
N89 WHEEL TURBO ALUMINUM
U23 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TRIP ODOMETER

Anyone know if these are correct?

The codes on the SPID but not in the letter appear to be body/trim codes:

19L, 19U, 6CU, 60H, 60I, 609, 7CU, 8HP and 9PZ.

Kirban's facts and figures book shows some WE2 options for the 1984 Regal T Type; such as N89 "cast aluminum wheel w/black paint" (which describes my wheels), 60H as "Lear Siegler front seat w/matching rear seat ...", and GM 19 as "black exterior color".

Anyone know of any places where I could check the rest of the unidentified codes?????

ps I tried to upload the letter I scanned but was rejected as either a jpg or pdf file - how should I upload?

YS2 SEAT RR DELUXE
N89 WHEEL TURBO ALUMINUM

Anyone know if these are correct?Have you tried the page I mentioned? Most appear to be listed. See the very lowest area of the page. All are in those movable lists.

The CO1 and YS2 are the only ones that give me some question.

The codes on the SPID but not in the letter appear to be body/trim codes:

19L, 19U, 6CU, 60H, 60I, 609, 7CU, 8HP and 9PZ.Pretty sure the 7, 8, and 9 codes are spring rate codes. As is the 6CU.

Please wait until the 15th and attachments should be working after the upgrade is installed.

WOW, thanx Ken/Scott. I know how much work it is just keying the information into a post correctly; let alone looking it up.

Scott - yup I have been over the RPO page thoroughly and was just a little bit uncomfortable accepting the info as the heading was Regular Product Option codes for 1985 -1987 Regals. When I checked the 1985 LM9 engine code for example, it said MFI not SFI, so I wasn't sure if codes had been used for different things in 1984.

Ken - man I really thank you - I don't think I ever expected as much info to analse.

Thanx again guys.
