Lower Chrome Ring

I'm replacing my broken shifter handle and the new kit came with a lower chrome ring, # 560889. My old handle did not have one. It looks like it should go on the bottom of the handle as it goes over the chrome shifter stalk. However, there is a small tab on the ring, does the tab go up or down, front or back. There doesn't seem to be a grove for it to fit in. Any ideas?

I have an old handle sitting around without any of its rings or buttons. I don't recall the bottom ring having a locating notch. The handle doesn't have any place for it to go.

Does it look to be the right size and thickness otherwise?

It seems to be the right diameter and fit, if that tab wasn't there.

I think I'll cut it off. It almost looks like it's left over from the molding process, like it wasn't cut off after chroming.

Mind if I ask where you got your new shifter? I'm in the market myself...is it OEM or reproduction.

Genuine GM, I just cut off the tab.
