I currently own a 84 GN that i bought about a year ago. There is a GN shop around where i live and they said they usually do the conversions but it'll cost me about $3,500. I was just wondering if anybody has done this conversion and how it turned out. Also if you could maybe just tell me what parts i would need exactly. if i can get the parts then i can do it myself for alot cheaper. -Thanks-

I have a really nice 85GN and have studied your question alot. I have chosen to upgrade my 85 to better than stock performance and quit now because of cost and desire to stay Hot Air because there are so few of them left. The best way to convert is get an 86/87 donor car because you will need every bracket, pulley ............ The only thing in common under the hood is the block. The harness and ECM need to be changed as well. I do not want to discourage you but this wedsite and Turbobuick.com as well can help you if you decide to go 86/87. This website also has recipes to get a Hot Air into the twelves as well. Just a few thoughts.Brad

Thanks for the info. One big reason i wanted to change to the 86-87 engine was the intercooler. if there is a way to put a front mount intercooler on an 84 than i'd probably reconsider the conversion. if anybody knows a way to put an intercooler on a 84-85 i would really apreciate it.-thanks-

Some thoughts...

I thought Innovative Turbo had an intercooler kit. What did they use on the cars on the 'Turbo Twins' program on the History Channel?

You can find a "used" front mount spearco intercooler for about $400 and that is much cheaper and will give you the same results as a stock 86/87 setup. Otherwise there are very few V2 intake kits out there for sale that include an intercooler(one on turbobuick.com board). Otherwise there is the new kits that are out - that look freaking cool as :madder:
I have nothing againist a guy turning a "hot air" in to a 86/87 conversion car........thats cool, just makes the "hot airs" rarer. To each their own. What are you looking for as how fast you want to go?? I think that is the question that your decision should be base on!! So, do you want to go to the track and run consistent 10's or do you want a nice 12 second street/strip car that will outrun the mustang down the street?? Nick

P.S. pics in my sig of both the spearco intercooler and V2 setup.

Is the V2 setup better than using a modified 87 intake manifold and why are they so hard to find? if anyone knows where to find one please let me know. also if anyone wants to seel their spearco intercooler kit please let me know.-thanks-

Not sure where your going to find a V2 setup. I would start by posting in the parts wanted section on every turbo buick board. And even post in the hot air section on every board that you want to purchase a V2 setup. Same goes if your looking for the spearco instead. The V2 will be hard to find as I have heard there was only like 24 of them made, before turbomotion quit making them. The new intake setup is nice too. Not sure on the flow of the new intake, I haven't really been following the progress. The V2 flow 230 cfm per runner which is better then stock.....LIKE 120 CFM!!
If you don't have your heart set on having a 86/87 engine then I would definatly look into the possiblities with an intercooler kit. Either way you go you will get huge performance upgrades. If you do go with the V2 or the new intake/intercooler setup you will need electric fans.

I started out with a hot air car. It went a 12.90 at 106 with a ta49. Converted to 86-87, still used the hot air motor (drilled and tapped hole for oil return from turbo). Car went 12.90 at 109 with stock turbo and stock fuel pump. I already had the 86-87 computer and mass air. It cost me about $1000.

:nono: This isn't the place to ask. We only speak about Buick drivelines here. More specifically, the Buick turbo V6 from '78-'89.

Try finding a Mustang board.
