I am installing a 9" cone filter and see that there is a sensor in the elbow between the MAF sensor and the stock filter? What is the sensor called and what is it's effect on our cars? Where should I insert it in my new setup, which is an ATR MAF pipe, MAF sensor, followed by 9" cone? Thanks!

Its the MAT (Mass Air Temperature) sensor. It is used to detect temperature on startup, and that is all. On a cold (VERY cold - like sub-freezing) start, the ECM will command a high idle to aid with stall provention and warmup/
The sensor should either be put into a snug hole made in the base of the K&N (probably NOT the neck - would affect airflow) or just tied off somewhere else in the nearby area.
