Recently bought a running project hot air T-Type. I am new to turbos and was hoping for some direction. I have two issues at the moment.
The idle is a little surging like up and down. I have checked and cleaned the pcv, replaced the air and fuel filters. It doesn't seem to be missing ... more like surging then a little low/rough then surges up, then repeats the pattern.
Second, the turbo sounds like a siren on the way up then comes on with only about up to about 5 psi on the gauge but seems normal sounding when it kicks in. Any thoughts on where to start would be appreciated! thanks, ed85T

Ed,

Try resetting your Idle Air Control (IAC) motor by following the procedure at http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/faq/IACreset.html :)

Try adjusting your Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) by following the procedure at http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/maintenance/TPS.html :)

These procedures may reference the 86-87 cars, don't worry, these are the same for the hot air cars.

My turbo does the same thing and has done so for 10 years. I'm not concerned, although others have stated that it is a sign that the turbo is on it's way out.

You can remove the throttle body from the turbo and give the turbo wheel a spin. You should be okay if the wheel doesn't move in and out or up or down, and spins freely by hand.

You may also want to upgrade your chip. The stocker sometimes does this.
