It depends on what you need and how you will be using it.
See http://www.turbo-link.com/tlink/scanchart.html
some are better for 'race only'. Some for 'in car, all the time'. Some for occasional use. Some are good at a lot of things. Some aren't.

i love using my direct scan, but it took awhile to find a lap top that would run it with no problems.
Found that i had to find a laptop that was almost as old as the direct scan.
" i have one of the oldest versions"
I dont see how people can own/ mod these Tr with out ones of these scan tools

you will need a laptop for turbo link and direct scan..
you dont need one to use a scanmaster..
scanmaster (http://www.fullthrottlespeed.com/itemdesc~ic~050SCAN2GN~eq~~Tp~.htm)

Take a look here:

(Same link as above) Pretty good description and pictures.
Same data as the ALDL laptop tools, but no laptop required ... displays two parameters at a time (vs. all of them at once on the software based tools)
Comparison here:

what does a scan tool do

It's a tool that hooks up and reads the parameters, sensors, actuators as the ECM "sees" them. It gives you diagnostic and real time data (like a bunch of gauges in the car that record!).

the direct scan, has faster refresh rates, logs passes, and you can moniter alot of data at one time.
Im not sure on the scanmaster, i dont have one and have never seen one

The ScanMaster works pretty much like a gauge ...
TurboLink and DirectScan are laptop based loggers.
Directscan requires DOS and will not run on Windows 2000/XP/NT
A direct comparison is here:
