View Full Version : unsure of tapping/ticking noise

Well I had a prob that I thought might of been a leaking header, but after resealing it, I still hear this tapping/ticking/high pitched hissing noise from the front passenger side cylinder. One thing to note is that it goes away when that plug wire is unplugged. I am not sure what to think it might be, it seems to be sounding louder after I resealed the header so maybe I will try again and see if it fixes itself, afterall I reused the copper gasket that was on there before and I heard it was a no no to do that. But if it isnt, what else could it be? Thanks for any help.

That leads me to think a bad plug or wire is arcing to ground somewhere (hence the ticking noise). If you can run the motor at night (no underhood light), you should be able to see the blue arc (and sometimes a sort of "halo").

It might just take a new set of wires/and or plugs! That'd be one of those "good news" fixes, eh? :shiny:

yeah hopefully it is a quick fix, I just recently changed plugs so, if it is the plug wire, couldn't I just unplug it and switch it to another cylinder(also switching at the coil pack of course) to troubleshoot? If it were to make the noise elswhere it would be the plugwire, please correct me if my thinking is incorrect. Thanks Ken.

Switching the plug wire to another cylinder is a great idea! (I'd swap sides so the noise will definitely move if that's the cause). :lite:

Or, just buy new wires ... they are kind of a standard maintenance item anyway. They age/crack/break pretty easily with all the underhood heat.

well, unfortunately that did not fix the prob, The noise is still there and it accelerates with the engine, the higher the rpm the faster the noise. I could of sworn it was an exhaust leak of some sort, I will reseat the header and reseal it to see if that will fix the prob. If not, I might be off to the mechanic shop. BTW, what is the firing order off the coil to the cylinders, I couldnt find a resource on that.

I would suggest eliminating the copper gaskets. Just use a bit of hi-temp (O2 sensor safe) RTV only.

You can swap wires front to back on any given coil tower. Also, check each coil's resistance.
