what would happen if the knock sensor failed?would the ECM pull timing out as a "safe mode" or would if get full timing?

You'd get a code 31, for one thing. http://www.gnttype.org/maint/malf.html#31 I imagine this sets up some 'error mode' operation. Though not entirely sure just what.

Isn't a code 31 a wastegate solenoid malf?

There's no active sensing of the knock sensor operation ...

If it fails, you will basically never get any indication of detonation (i.e. full timing, even if it's knocking).

Nope. Read the page on error codes via the link posted.

per the service manual you can check your knock sensor to see if it is functioning correctly by reving the eng up to about 1800 in park. Take a large screw driver and tap as close to the knock sensor as possibe. If the RPMs drop then the knock sensor and the Electronic Spark Control are OK.

Actually, I'd expect a code 42 and maybe a code 43 (both EST related) if the knock sensor was really totally shorted or dead.

Now I'm confused, I read it. Code 31 is for wastegate solenoid malfunction. Per the link you provided.

:ow: There goes the rest of my brain...

Obviously should have said code 43. My apologies. Thanks for pointing out the error.
