I have an OTC 3460 that only goes to 1984 GM models. I contacted OTC and they no longer support any upgrades for this unit. Are there upgrades still available somewhere out in cyberspace? Or, will this scanner work on an 87 and I wouldn't need an upgrade?

Thanks!

It won't work on the 86-87s ... each vehicle basically has a unique datastream in GM OBDI.

You might try ebay for upgrades ... never know what you might find. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on the web either (albeit a cursory search). You might consider a ScanMaster or TurboLink ...

Is that one a cartridge type unit?

*low whistle* Well, I wouldn't waste much time on it. A quick Ebay search shows you could probably find an OTC 2000 with a "Domestestic Pathfinder" cartridge for $25 or less if you really want to scan your car with minimal capabilities. Probably get a OTC4000E for $200-250 or so. But the tools Ken mentioned are much better, regardless.

I have Direct Scan but it looks like a pain to install. I have a Scanmaster for my son's car and it works great. Since I have a couple of turbo cars at the house and have three friends with them, too, I thought a portable scan tool would be better. However, I'm looking to the experts for advice!

direct scan, has really fast refresh rate, logs data, very helpful tool. If you have direct scan and not going to use it, Are you wanting to sell it?

I have scanmaster in my car at all times, but for fine tunning i use my direct scan

I might sell the Direct Scan as most of the people I know have Turbolink which I may buy in addition to the OTC.

I have a Vetronix Tech 1A that I would trade for your DirectScan. You should email me at mickdastick@comcast.net so we can figure it out.

The scan tool has Factory GM software from 1981-2001 with OBD II. It also has Ford & Chrysler thru 2001. Powertrain, Body & Chassis systems.

This system provides much more than just codes & data. It has bi-directional controls which means that you can command outputs & actuators on/off, shift transmissions, perform relearn functions, etc. I also have cd rom based user manuals for all of the software.
