Car is an 86 T-Type with about 40,000 miles on a Dutweiler rebuilt motor. Does not smoke on inital start up during driving. Just after driving then coming to a stop light or such. Lets out some grey/white smoke, not a huge cloud but just enough to see and smell, then stops. Does not smoke again while starting to move or at WOT. Anyone have any ideas on what may cause this. Was thinking rings but that would be at start up. Kinda lost on why only when stopping for just a second.
Thanks
Rob

Is it coming out the tailpipes? If there is a significant white component, it may be coolant leakage into one or more combustion chambers. Might be worth checking your coolant level and your plug conditions. Might need a compression check to see if there is a leaking gasket. Check for tailpipe residue as well.

Pretty sure is coming out the tailpipes. Did a compression check and all checked good. Maybe I should leave the pressure gauge on for a minute or so to check for leakage. That's how you would check for a leaky gasket right? Coolant was a bit low, topped off will see if it goes down quickly. Spark plug socket out on loan will get that back ($$) and check plug condition. Was never any good at reading plugs. What should I see / what would be the signs of coolant leakage?

I had the same problem…the seal on my turbo starting leaking. Oil dripping into the exhaust and puff puff white smoke thru the tailpipes.

Sounds like the Turbo seal that keeps the oil contained to the turbo itself, I personally have never tried to replace one. I replaced the whole unit as mine had some play in the shaft. Check with Harry or one of the guys at Precision Turbo about replacing the seal if you wanna go that route. :D

This is what I did. I reinstalled my stock turbo and the problem went away. I sent the bad seal turbo to PTE www.precisionte.com. They fixed it for $150…I think.

Turbo upgrage requires injector upgrade and fuel pump being at above-stock capacity. Be careful...

Normally if you get to the turbo early you can have it rebuilt real reasonable.I had the same thing happen to my te44 on the way to BG a few years back .I was following my wife driven the GN down.I saw just on and off of stopping it would puff smoke.ended up being the tubo seal.Limit rebuilt it to brand new in a week .

So no matter what kind of upgrade the injectors have to be upgraded too? Damn nothing comes cheap on these car huh?
Now gotta see if I can find a close place to do the turbo rebuild. The cars' my daily driver; so really can't be down long. Maybe just have to get another car.
