I'm curious to hear from the GN/T-Type guys what has been the limit (ET and/or 60ft times etc) of the in tank pump and when people have had to move toward an external pump. I'm looking at doing an turbo/EFI conversion on my g-body and am debating if I should get an efi tank or leave the regular tank in and get a sump and an external pump.

Forget trying to pin 60' times to HP and pump capacity. Too may factors surrounding traction, gearing, etc.

I would say that roughly 11.0 or 550 HP for a single in-tank pump is about the limit. Now the stock TR pump hanger can be modified for two pumps and thus more power, so caveat emptor.

Thanks for the quick reply. That is the type of answer I've been hoping for.

The reason I ask about the 60' is that in the past I've seen issues with fuel uncovering the sock on hard leaving cars, again something that can be dealt with by proper placement of baffles or a rear mounted sump etc. etc.

The TR tank is well baffled internally with plastic. Totally different than the carbed cars. The pickup sock sits very low as well.

Along the same lines, what are the limits of the stock in tank pump? thanks

You mean the 20+ year old in tank pump?

When new, they were able to manage a mid-13 car OK. Maybe low 13's. After that, they were on the edge. Mind you, that was when new. I don't think anyone I know pushed them harder because they liked their motors too much.

I still have my original head gaskets. Curious to see how long you'll have yours.

not sure on the stock one... but a single intank 255 is usually good for around 500 HP

Since they are 20 years old ... most don't even keep up with stock levels any more.

PUSHING it you might get low 13s/high 12s with stock pump (assuming brand new pump).

It's like lighting a fuse trying to push a stock pump at all ... very good chance you'll get things leaning out and damage from detonation.

The key is fuel, air, and spark! As long as they are in the right proportion, you get horsepower! Get them out of balance and you get disaster.

One other thought.....Would adding a hotwire kit to the stock setup be of any benefit??

Nowhere near what replacing it will offer, however.
