View Full Version : Help! Trigger Happy Left Rear Wheel

I think this is probably a wheel cylinder issue, but I would like some other opinions first. When I start the car, even after a short time setting, the left rear wheel wants to lock up, and even the slightest pressure on the break pedal causes this (reverse or forward). It only does it when travelling slow. If you are stopping and going as you would in normal traffic it functions normally. If you are backing it out of the garage it will do it without fail. It seems to be getting worse, so I would like to take care of it before it starts doing it at road speed, which could cause a major problem.

Sounds like something is leaking back there. If the brake warning light hasn't come yet than I'd bet you have a leaking axle seal on that corner. The brakes will lock when the shoes get wet enough. Time to pull the drum off and look.

That, or something in your hardware on that side has gone completely wonky. Time for a look, I think.

How hard is it to fix the axle seal?

I just pulled the drum, and the axle seal is free of leaks. The pads are in great shape, and there is nothing wet. There is a lot of brake dust all over everything. What should I clean everything with? thanks

A can of brake cleaner (i.e. CRC Brakleen or a generic equivalent) ought to do the trick. Spread a LOT of newspaper around to absorb the fluid and junk glop that comes off. Be sure to protect your eyes.

Keller, you are definately not kidding about the mess! I did this before I read this, because one of my brain cells involved in long term memory of my dad and I as a kid kicked in and said go get a can of CRC.....Too bad the one about the newspaper didn't....Anyway, the brakes work great now

See "Suspension/Rear End" thread for the axle seal chat.
