What is opinion of this converter. Set up will be stock '86 T-type except for TA49 and adj fuel pressure reg. Will run ~17 to 18# boost. Thanks.

First, you do realize that this isn't a lockup converter like the converter that came in your car, right? Without lockup, you will lose mileage at highway speeds. Plus lack MPH at the track when racing. Big time.
http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/HoleShot http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Hol...0-4R-27-spline For the price charged for these, you can probably get a lockup unit from a TR vendor that will do all this does, and more. Probably be stronger, too. http://www.ckperformance.com/resourc...ONVERTERS.html http://www.patsperformanceconverter....ucts.asp?cat=9 or Dan's Converters, Inc. (618) 498-8860 / (618) 972-4670. I used a 3000 lockup from the latter with a TA49 for many years with great results. |
Re: B&M Hole Shot 2400
Thanks. That is interesting, since my initial research on the B&M website showed that the Hole Shot 2400 can be used with lock up.....
http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Hol...0-4R-27-spline and quoting from the installation instruction .pdf file on that page, "The new B&M torque converter can be used as either a lockup or non lockup unit. If the vehicle currently has an operational TCC it will continue to operate....." Sounds good, anyway, which led to my inquiry to see what opinion is about them. Boy, that could cause some disgust, couldn't it, if you did all that work based on advertisement and expecting it to work. Ha! I wonder if they have quite a few returns? So, no, I didn't realize that. Thanks for letting me know. Advice from this site has been helpful in the past. Dan's Converters sound interesting. 3000 with lock up. How does that work on the highway? Does it actually lock up when cruising at 2300-2500, or is there a lot of slush there? BTW, when I'm concerned about my gas mileage, I drive my four cylinder Toyota. Gas and tires on a T-type, who's concerned? |
Re: B&M Hole Shot 2400
I misspoke. I contacted B&M, and confirmed that both the 70415 and 70426 are lockup.
Still, I had one of Dan's units for 25k miles. At that point, I was moving up in stall as I was going to a larger turbo. I had him cut it open, as I was sure I had chewed the lockup clutch up by locking it up at the track with so many passes. (It is a much larger than stock clutch, by the way.) The clutch material still had the OEM white printing on it, even after all the miles and hundreds, if not a thousand, 3rd gear WOT lockups at the track. I was very happy with it. The trans is set to lock up the TCC at whatever speed the chip is configured to do it in 3rd and 4th gear. It has nothing to do with stall. Only throttle position, brake applied, or not, and correct gear engaged. When it engages, you are essentially at a 1:1 drive, with no stall. That is why it only engages at higher speeds. |
