V6 owner in the UK
Dear Sirs,i am installing a buick Turbo v6 in a 1949 chevy 1/2 ton truck,i'm fitting the v6 instead of any v8,to prove a point that the v6 is a very under-estimated engine,that, and to slap a few bums.My problem being the lack of any information over here,what i need to know is what books would be best to go for, to understand the workings and assembly of said engine,ie,a workshop manual,many thanks in advance,John. john@byfleetrodshop.fsnet.co.uk

Factory service manuals area available from several sources.

I thank you for that kind Sir,i'll see what i can find that will help,also i've just found out,(bearing in mind that my engine was bought in a pile of bits,from someones shed) that the turbo unit is seazed,if i can't free it easily,i'll have to by one new.

Just ran across this on eBay ... looks like a complete set and they are INVALUABLE for keeping the various bits and pieces straight on this car!

Knowing what year setup you have will be critical, of course. The block ID *may* definitively tell you. However, if pieces have been mixed around, it may not. Check carefully to be sure you know what you're working with...

Gentlemen,the engine is pretty much all there,but in bits,the turbo is still attached the manifold,the carb looks fine and all the internals of the engine are there,along with this engine came new:Pistons,rings, bearings,gaskets,cam,lifters and timing-chain.The previous owner also included a new Edelbrock inlet manifold(to remove the turbo and just put a carb) but i wish to retain the turbo.My problem,on the engine,is not knowing what year or anything else about it,i looked for id numbers on the bare block,but could not find any other than the casting numbers 1261787 on the top of the block near the gearbox mounting flange,also,3.3-1 in large numbers,on the block near the oil dip-stick hole.If anyone could tell me what it is,Great !!!!

Ok ...
The carb is a huge give away ... pre-84 engine. Probably has 14 bolts in the oil pan (another clue ... later engines had 20). From: http://www.gnttype.org/general/v6hist.html 1261787 looks to be a 1978 block and probably an early even fire version (right after the conversion to even fire from odd fire). I'd bet the large stamping is actually 3.8 by the dipstick (usually the displacement is cast there). Something like this might help: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1978-...93067353QQrdZ1 Based on that, you want to look for a set of 1978-1983 service manuals, since those engines were pretty much a "family" with the intake and turbo set ups. Also, you'll be looking at maybe 180 HP or so ... you might want to look into putting later (86/87) heads, headers, and maybe a stand alone fuel injection set up on it (if it's in the budget). |

Thanks for the link,i've asked the seller if the manual covers the turbo and am just waiting for a reply.Because it's an early-ish engine,is it worth persuing it further,ie getting the turbo rebuilt and throwing money at it ,i mean,is agood engine to rebuild ?

It's a good engine and relatively simple ... however, it depends on your goals. For a show car/cruiser, it'll have good torque and be unique ... however, it'll probably be a bit low on horsepower if the car is heavy. Without the electronic engine controls and such on the later motors, you will be limited on how much boost you can use and subsequently the horsepower levels.
