my experimental wheel clear coat..
I'm not trying to be cheap, but I learn through experimentation. I gradually apply my results to more risky situations. I have found several cost effective solutions this way. For example..When I get nausea I swallow diced ginger root with water.. If you aren't aware of the ingredients in a product, then you may be paying too much. Oven Cleaner, Draino, and paint stripper that contain Sodium Hydroxide have different prices. The EPA taxes the product manufacturer according to the way that the product is to be used. If you were to sell gasoline as an air freshener then it would have to sell for 10 bucks a ounce. ok..I know this is long...If you have ever tried to remove latex paint from aluminum, then you know that is a tough job..Laquer thinner, alcohol. or sand paper... I'm gonna give this a shot..and I'm gonna BRUSH it on.. thats right! ..only one wheel for now though |

Re: my experimental wheel clear coat..
OK..this is about the average distance somebody is going to see a car..
I took the picture from my hip, but did my best to avoid my nuts..they age differently and are irrelevent. These wheels have been exposed to bbq cleaner. I will brush on the latex clear paint... Any vaticination should be put on hold. I will keep my "E" at zero when posting the results.. The close-up pictures after the bbq cleaner have already been posted..I will do the same close-ups when applied.. |

Re: my experimental wheel clear coat..
I did not use the TSP so I can get my four bucks back. Some areas were hard to clean. I don't know how long it will last. It's definately not 100 percent by any means..but only about an hour of work without power tools. cost was about 11 bucks all together.

Re: my experimental wheel clear coat..
I hope I'm not boring anyone..
What I learned in the 1st experiment was that the "bar keeper's friend" BKF stuff was VERY EFFECTIVE in cleaning the "hammered"(for lack of a better word) inset surface of the rim with a tooth brush and water. Any serious" gray" discoloration, probaby due to scarring from road debris, did NOT change much. I did not open the TSP because I have little use for it as a household cleaner..and it cost 4 bucks. "BKF" cost $1.49 and I can clean my ceramic stovetop with it. I had trouble maintaining an even looking polished surface..some places got too shiny I do not want to use a polishing wheel yet..because I want to maintain some " bite" for the latex. A white terry cloth rag dipped with 2 fingers into the paint was most effective in application, with the polished surfaces of the spokes smoothed with a clean finger after it gelled. I returned the TSP and got 320 grit wet and paper for the "spoke" sections...almost an even exchange in cost. I will wet sand the spoke section unilaterally on the next rim in the hopes of a more even look while providing enough bite. It's my dime.. |

Re: my experimental wheel clear coat..
Wheel #2.. The focus sucks.
In my attempt to use more commonly available products..(stuff you may have at home) ..I gave EASY OFF a try. WHOA!! too agressive!! Don't do this The BFK is very good. $1.49. and gets an "A" The bbq cleaner was milder and soapy and worked well.( but not a common household product) it gets a "B" 800 grit sandpaper was ok for the spokes, but the spokes have a natural short grain pattern..I ignored this and wet sanded lenghtwise. The latex made everything come together nicely..(but time will tell) I"m gonna only use BFK on the 3rd wheel . No Strpper or latex.. |

Re: my experimental wheel clear coat..
That's funny I'm going through the same frustration as yourself with these T rims. I ended up snapping and went with powdercoated rims.
1st pic is after a weedend of cleaning my original rims. 2nd is the PC rim with new meats.

Re: my experimental wheel clear coat..
The powder coating looks nice. But they did not re-machine the machined areas. And they used a grey powder coat vs. a silver.
The ones I had done some years ago are a little more OEM-flavored, but still not completely original. The wheel was painted/coated, the machined areas were re-machined (you lose a bit of metal doing this) and then the wheel was clear-coated. See some of the pictures in http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/pict...s/twheels.html to see what I am talking about.
