Bang Head HELP 87t rebuild question

I have a 87 t-type that i bought with a rod noise and have pulled the engine out to have rebuild. the issue i have is im in Los Angeles and would like to find a place to redo my motor that is not going to rape me. I have called a few places and they want 3500 to 5500 just to rebuild my motor that does not include remove (already out) or install, and im not looking to modify it just a stock rebuild. I know that the only difference in these are the crank, pistons, and head gaskets so i can not for the life of me figure out this excessive cost as a standard 3.8 for the same year is only 1400.00 and that is a complete redo. also should i use this opportunity to make any changes or modifications to better the motor. I am looking to upgrade the turbo and injectors and chip once the engine is done to run in the 12's as i want this to be a streetable daily driver but able at a moments notice to spank the chevy's and ford's . I really want to get this car going again and any help would be appreciated. PS im selling my 87gn rolling body to help finance this quest but would be interested in a trade to have my engine done if your in la. any and all help appreciated as this is a new adventure for me as i have 3 gs skylarks so this new style with the electronics and fuel injection etc. is new to me. my direct line is 818-957-4230 thanks mike.

The rods are also the stronger "two dot" rods. See http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/pict...rods/rods.html

A basic "recipe" setup should easily get a 86-87 TR in the 12s with no problem. If you will have the motor apart and would be willing to do a little head cleanup and add a cam, things will go very easy. See http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/recipes/recipepage.html for some buildup combos.

Given that you have rod knock, I would fear the crank being trashed or having a bad throw. The rolled fillet cranks are pretty prized, and if damaged could be a big part of your financial outlay. I've heard of them being cut 10/10 and being used OK, but it would make me nervous.

A lot rests on the right machine work, using the right bearings, and doing the right preparation. Off the cuff, $5500 for a stock build motor seems high. I'd expect maybe closer to half that. Of course I'd want a quote for just the machine work on the bare block, to let me put it together and see what that runs, too.

Call some of the shops in our vendor list to get some numbers just for an idea from TR sources. Though they aren't in your area, it might be a good yardstick.

I just purchased the Groom's level 11. I think it's a pretty good deal. Check it out: www.groomsengines.com
