Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
I'm looking to change the rear wheel cylinders and brake shoes - for building boost and allowing me to hold it at the line. 60' time is horrible - 1.81 is my best. Ok I searched online for the 7/8" Bendix Cylinders and believe it or not I didn't find anything. I found several websites, but they want the vehicle that they are for. I also called Autozone and the guy told me he could only search by application/vehicle. I even gave him the part number listed in tech info. area. So my question is, what vehicles are the Bendix wheel cylinders for? Are they for the s10 as well? Also are there other rear wheel cylinders that will work?
Now on to the brake shoes. I think I've seen part numbers listed for these, but I can't seem to find the thread where I found them. Again I asked the person at autozone and could only search by vehicle So the question is the same as above, I know the vehicle is the s10 w/manual brakes, but what model year and engine displacement(if this matters). Thanks, Charles

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
The wheel cylinders are for an '84 S-10 with manual brakes. They will be the larger ones. Or should be. They should be a different P/N than those for the TR. Check to see. Don't buy no name ones, because they use fewer parts and thus use the same numbers for more apps.
The shoes...its hard to find the ones you want. Ask for a non-metallic shoe. Chances are, you won't find it. It used to be the cheap ones were non-metallic. Not so much anymore. Ask to see both the lifetime and regular types and see what you come up with. Look for metal specs or "glitter". Try to avoid those for max line holding power.

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
As far as the shoes, these would be direct replacement shoes? Is there any particular manufacturer or brand that you would recommend?

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
Cheap organic shoes work very well ... stay away from the metallics and ceramics. Those work well with a little heat, but the organics work well cold (like holding boost at the line!)

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
Ok, has anyone used the wheel cylinders from NAPA pn# 37644? Are these ok to use or do these need to be Genuine GM parts?
Also NAPA list TS514 as the brake shoes they offer, the sales person said they were organic, but the MSDS shows they have iron in them. Are these ok to use? Autozone list Duralast PN 514 and I ask the sales person if they were non-metallic/organic and he said not metallic, but they are organic. I've seen a previous post from Keller that listed these and he said they are non-metallic, but that was 2005 and the material could have changed. Are these ok to use? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks, Charles

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
37644 cross references to manual brakes, 1985 S-10, so they should work fine.
The Duralast shoes should work fine.

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
Why not ask to see the shoes in person. You will be able to tell what you are getting that way.

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
Again, thanks for the information.
"Why not ask to see the shoes in person." I did and I didn't get the TS514 from NAPA because you could clearly see that they had some metal in them. Interesting because the sales person said they were non-metallic. As far as I could tell, the Duralast were non-metallic and that is what I bought from Autozone. These were PN514 and I purchased the cylinders pn# 37644 from NAPA. Now the fun part, swapping them out.

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
The cylinders and shoes have been replaced. Of course I managed to round off the nut on one side that connects the brake line to cylinder and I had to cut and replace a section of the line, which required some custom bending to the replacement section of the brake line. Hopefully it will hold up.
Next comes the line lock.

Re: Rear Wheel Cylinders and Brake Shoes
Did you replace a piece of the line, the whole line to that side or did you just cut the flare off, put a new nut on and re-flare (DOUBLE flare is required)?
